Chief Warden and Fire Extinguisher User Course

Conducted by our experienced fire service and emergency response trainers this combined course is designed to train participants to perform the role of Chief Warden in their workplace emergency control organisation (ECO) and control small uncomplicated fires using a fire extinguisher, hose reel or a fire blanket. This course offers the complimentary skill set for Chief Wardens to be able to effectively control small fires in the workplace.

This course is a combination of our Fire Extinguisher, Fire Warden and Chief Fire Warden courses for business to be able to satisfy their minimum essential training requirements for leaders of their Emergency Control Organisation (ECO).

Competency Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded the following statement of attainment:

Course Duration:
  • Face to Face: 1 day full face to face
  • Online Delivery with Face to Face Practical Assessment: Self-paced online learning with a scheduled 60-minute face to face practical assessment
Course Delivery Options

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Intrinsic Safety Training or Third party facility.

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations are reflective of group sizes between 4 and 15 students. 

If there are less students in a group course duration may be reduced by a maximum of 10%. 

Therefore, if a class size exceeds 15 students it may  be necessary to increase course duration.

Payment Terms

Individual bookings require payment upfront or at time of booking.

Group booking payment terms are based on agreement between the client and Intrinsic Safety Training.

Course Content and Assessment

The key areas covered by this course include:

  • Apply Work, Health and Safety (WHS)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements
  • Assist occupants who may require assistance
  • Assist with post emergency response activities
  • Contribute to facility emergency planning
  • Give clear directions to occupants and visitors
  • Implement safe work practices
  • Initiate and control initial emergency response
  • Take on a leadership role within emergency control organisation and/or a deputy role for other emergency control organisation positions
  • Undertake pre-emergency planning
  • Use communications systems
  • Wear required emergency control organisation identification
  • Brief emergency services personnel
  • Command, control and coordinate facility emergency response procedures
  • Comply with legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and regulations concluding facility emergency
  • Give clear directions and keep others informed throughout the emergency in accordance with facility emergency plan
  • Identify evacuation assembly areas
  • Implement facility emergency response procedures
  • Interpret information displayed on emergency control indicator equipment including fire indicator panel, building management system and security management system
  • Respond to emergency signals and warnings appropriately
  • Communicate with occupants, emergency personnel and stakeholders

Physical Requirements

Students will have to carry out various physical practical exercises. Therefore students should be capable of conducting the following activities:

  • Demonstrate effective use of emergency response equipment during an emergency
  • Demonstrate effective leadership of workers during an emergency
  • Demonstrate correct application of emergency response procedures in various situations
  • Demonstrate effective accounting of workers during an emergency situation
  • Demonstrate effective leadership of an Emergency Control Organisation during an emergency
  • Demonstrate effective use of equipment and resources available to manage an emergency
  • Demonstrate effective decision making to ensure peoples safety during an emergency
  • Demonstrate effective understanding of emergency procedures and plans during an emergency
  • Using a variety of fire extinguishers to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a hose reel to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a fire blanket to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a fire blanket to effectively extinguish a casualty who is on fire
Assessment Components

Both practical (tasks and scenarios) and written theory assessments will be conducted during face to face training sessions.

Student Information

Students undertaking this course will have to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
  • Sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course

Personal Safety
  • Personal safety equipment must be provided by/for the student and worn during training

Venue Information/Catering

Students attending courses at our venues must provide:

  • Lunch (cafes operate within or close to all of our training venues)

  • Appropriate clothing (preferably long pants and closed footwear)
