Industrial Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Course

Conducted by our experienced breathing apparatus technicians, this course is designed to train participants to safely carry out work in hazardous or irrespirable atmospheric environments whilst wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

This course equips participants with practical skills and knowledge to safely inspect, maintain and operate self-contained breathing apparatus, as well as safe systems of work and equipment that can be applied to any situation that SCBA is being used, to ensure work is carried out safely. This course provides the competency requirements to safely operate self-contained breathing apparatus in unsafe atmospheres.

Any person who is required to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in an industrial, confined space, fire or hazardous material environment should attend this course.

Course Duration:
  • Face to Face: 1 day full face to face course

Course Delivery Options

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Intrinsic Safety Training or Third party facility.

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations are reflective of group sizes between 4 and 15 students. 

If there are less students in a group course duration may be reduced by a maximum of 10%. 

Therefore, if a class size exceeds 15 students it may  be necessary to increase course duration.

Group booking payment terms are based on agreement between the client and Intrinsic Safety Training.

Course Content and Assessment

The course includes the following topics:

  • Characteristics, component parts, and operation of self-contained breathing apparatus

  • Operation of a breathing apparatus

  • Operational testing, standard procedures, and safe work practices when wearing breathing apparatus

  • Entrapment procedures

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements

  • Knowledge of relevant Australian Standards (AS)

  • Respiratory system, effects of irrespirable atmospheres on the body and how breathing apparatus support personal safety

  • Types of irrespirable atmosphere

  • Use of ancillary equipment, personal lines, and tallies

  • Use of Distress Signal Unit (DSU)

  • Use of breathing apparatus control equipment

Physical Requirements

Students will have to carry out various physical practical exercises. Therefore students should be capable of conducting the following activities:

  • Correctly fitting a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Climbing into and though confined space/low-visibility environments
  • Being lowered and raised on a pulley system in a confined space environment
  • Performing manual tasks in a confined space environment whilst wearing SCBA
Assessment Components

Both practical (tasks and scenarios) and written theory assessments will be conducted during face to face training sessions.

Student Information

Students undertaking this course will have to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
  • Sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course

Personal Safety
  • Personal safety equipment must be provided by/for the student and worn during training

Venue Information/Catering

Students attending courses at our venues must provide:

  • Lunch (cafes operate within or close to all of our training venues)

  • Appropriate clothing (preferably long pants and closed footwear)
