Fire Extinguisher User Course

Conducted by our experienced fire service trainers, this course is designed to train participants to safely control a small, uncomplicated fire using a fire extinguisher, hose reel or a fire blanket. This course provides the competency requirements to provide an effective initial response to workplace fire emergencies. Any person who may be required to use portable firefighting equipment to control small fires in the workplace (in all industries and sectors) should attend this course. 

Supervisors/Managers or workers who also have additional responsibilities in the to guide and assist in the evacuation of other workers and other persons in the workplace should also attend our Fire Warden training. Supervisors/Managers or workers who have a primary liaison responsibility with emergency services and are required to make decisions in relation to peoples safety during an emergency in the workplace should also attend our Chief Fire Warden training.

Course Duration:
  • Face to Face: 3 hours (minimum) full face to face course
  • Online Delivery with Face to Face Practical Assessment: Self-paced online learning with a scheduled 30-minute face to face practical
Course Delivery Options

This course will be delivered in the workplace or at an Intrinsic Safety Training or Third party facility.

Important information regarding course durations:

Course durations are reflective of group sizes between 4 and 15 students. 

If there are less students in a group course duration may be reduced by a maximum of 10%. 

Therefore, if a class size exceeds 15 students it may  be necessary to increase course duration.

Payment Terms

Individual bookings require payment upfront or at time of booking.

Group booking payment terms are based on agreement between the client and Intrinsic Safety Training.

Course Content and Assessment

The key areas covered by this course include:

  • How to prepare for fire emergencies

  • How to identify and assess fire situations

  • How to safely control fire emergencies, where possible

  • How to use first attack firefighting equipment

  • How to report workplace fire response

  • Demonstrate effective use of fire extinguishers

  • Demonstrate effective use of a hose reel

  • Demonstrate effective use of a fire blanket

Physical Requirements

Students will have to carry out various physical practical exercises. Therefore students should be capable of conducting the following activities:

  • Using a variety of fire extinguishers to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a hose reel to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a fire blanket to effectively extinguish a small fire
  • Using a fire blanket to effectively extinguish a casualty who is on fire
Assessment Components

Both practical (tasks and scenarios) and written theory assessments will be conducted during face to face training sessions.

Student Information

Students undertaking this course will have to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
  • Sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete this course

Personal Safety
  • Personal safety equipment must be provided by/for the student and worn during training

Venue Information/Catering

Students attending courses at our venues must provide:

  • Lunch (cafes operate within or close to all of our training venues)

  • Appropriate clothing (preferably long pants and closed footwear)
